Crystal Castle and Minyon Falls Drive
For an alternative day out, away from the beaches and shopping of Byron Bay, there are some lovely things to do in the Byron Hinterland, The Crystal Castle and Minyon Falls are great places to explore.
Local Tip: Tailor your route to suit your interests. Head north out of Byron and explore the cute hippy town of Mullumbimby before venturing to the castle. Alternatively, take in pretty valley views and the sweeping rural landscape to the sea and Cape Byron by heading south from Byron onto The Hinterland Way, before turning right onto Coolamon Scenic Drive.
The Crystal Castle is a 25 minute drive from the center of Byron Bay, take the northern exit from town and at the large highway roundabout take the 3rd exit into Myocum Road, follow this lovely country road right to the end and with the Mullumbimby golf club on the right take a left turn onto Coolamon Scenic Drive winding up the hill turning right at the top into Goonengerry Rd and then right again after a 300m into Monet Drive you will see the hundreds of prayer flags of the crystal Castle on the left.
A visit to the peaceful Crystal Castle includes walks in the exquisite natural surroundings. You can join the daily workshops and experiences, including the Music of the Plants, Crystal Experience and famous Peace Experience. Be in awe of the Enchanted Cave, the largest amethyst cave in the world, and also the world’s tallest geode pair, The Crystal Guardians. Be at peace with the largest stone Blessing Buddha in Australia, and the only Kalachakra World Peace Stupa in the southern hemisphere.

On the leaving the Crystal Castle turn right onto Goonengerry road follow all the way to Federal village, then turn left into Repentance Creek Road. Head west and cross Byangerry Creek then coopers creek, go right into Coopers Creek road, left into Minyon Falls Road and then there are 2 parking areas one at the falls and one at the Minyon grass picnic area where the main walk departs from.
Minyon Falls walking track leads through rainforest to a scenic waterfall in Nightcap National Park. The Minyon Falls walking track offers the opportunity to experience a range of forests, pristine creeks and a spectacular waterfall in Nightcap National Park. Winding through Nightcap escarpment, in northern NSW, this beautiful track will challenge and delight bushwalking fans in equal measure.
Leading through dense rainforest, be sure to lookout for the spectacular stand of old-growth Brushbox trees on the western side of Repentance Creek. Stop for a tranquil picnic lunch along the fern-lined creeks.
You can choose to start this track from either of the picnic areas at Minyon Falls. The track links to Boggy Creek walk, which leads north to Rummery Park campground, in neighbouring Whian Whian State Conservation Area. Its not a difficult walk but be sure to have sturdy non slip walking shoes, sunscreen, hats & drinking water.
